For destination leaders, the most important result is not a price point. It is evidence that visitors assign economic value to the quality of the night itself. That makes darkness more than visual scenery, while still leaving a large gap between environmental value and the price of a commercial program.

What the working paper studied

The Utah State University working paper, Artificial Light at Night Erodes Cultural Ecosystem Services at Scale, draws on 634 visitors across nine dark-sky parks. It estimates willingness to pay for improvements in effective night-sky quality.

The authors report an estimated value of about $18 per trip for a marginal improvement and about $45 for a one-class improvement on the Bortle scale. The Bortle scale describes observable sky darkness, with lower classes representing darker conditions and better visibility of faint celestial features.

This values sky quality, not a tour ticket

The distinction is essential. The estimates concern a change in the environmental quality visitors experience. They do not tell a resort to charge $45 for stargazing, and they do not measure the added value of a guide, telescope, transport, food or accommodation package.

A stated willingness-to-pay estimate can reveal the importance of a resource even when no direct market transaction exists. Converting that value into a product requires separate evidence about format, service, capacity and purchase behavior.

The finding strengthens the case for lighting work

A destination cannot create a darker sky through programming alone. It can inventory unnecessary light, shield fixtures, use warmer light, direct it downward, add controls and establish a curfew where safety and operations allow. Those actions can protect the very quality the study suggests visitors value.

The commercial and conservation decisions should be connected. A lighting improvement can reduce wasted light and protect habitat. A guest program can explain why the change matters. Visitor feedback can then show whether guests notice and value the result.

Working-paper status requires restraint

This is emerging 2026 research, not a settled benchmark for the tourism industry. The sample comes from nine dark-sky parks, where visitors may already place more importance on natural night conditions than the average resort or urban traveler.

Destinations should cite the paper as an early valuation signal and follow future peer review, revisions and replication. It is strongest when placed beside other evidence, such as broad traveler interest and measured participation, rather than asked to carry the entire business case.

Turn the research into a local experiment

A practical test can combine a lighting baseline, a small program and a visitor survey. Ask guests whether darkness affected destination choice, whether they noticed the lighting environment, which program format they valued and whether the experience changed their likelihood of staying, returning or recommending the place.

If the destination later tests price, vary real product bundles rather than borrowing the paper's environmental valuation. A guided one-hour program, a private family session and an accommodation package solve different visitor problems and should be evaluated separately.
